Waikoloa is on the Kohala Coast, the dry, sunny resort coast among lava fields north of the Kona airport, along Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. ʻAnaehoʻomalu means protected mullet in Hawaiian, and its fishponds, Kuʻualiʻi and Kahapapa, were once used by Hawaiian royalty to raise mullet.

Petroglyphs are preserved within Waikoloa Beach Resort along a marked trail; stay on it and do not approach the carvings for photos or rubbings. The State-managed section of the Ala Kahakai trail is open to the public between ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay and Spencer Beach Park. Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area and Waialea Bay, a marine life conservation district, are also on this coast.
