A free-falling waterfall in ʻAkaka Falls State Park, seen from a paved loop trail near Honomū.

ʻAkaka Falls is a free-falling waterfall in ʻAkaka Falls State Park, run by the Hawaii Division of State Parks, at the end of ʻAkaka Falls Road southwest of Honomū. It plunges into a steep-sided gulch cut by Kolekole Stream, the same gulch Kahuna Falls drops into. You see the falls from viewpoints on a paved loop trail that starts just off the parking lot. Part of the trail is closed for now because of fallen trees, so check the State Parks page before you go. The park has restrooms, and its water and comfort station has reopened. Non-residents pay an entrance fee and a parking fee, by credit card, and State Parks asks you to pay before you arrive because cell reception at the park is limited. Stay on the trail; pets, bicycles, alcohol and smoking are not allowed in the park.
