Waipiʻo Valley, seen from the overlook at the end of the Hāmākua Heritage Corridor drive, was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I and a center of political and religious life. Taro fields, rivers and waterfalls, among them Hiʻilawe Falls, fill the valley, and the land from the valley floor to the beach is private property.
