Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park is closed. The County ran the park on land it leased from the owner, Black Sand Beach LLC, and closed it when the lease ended; it stays closed until the County completes buying the land or reaches a temporary lease. The County has announced a tentative agreement to buy the site so the park stays open to the public for good. The beach is black sand with a rocky shoreline, reached from Ninole Loop Road, and the park sits on its south side. Its sandy areas are resting sites for protected Hawaiian green sea turtles, so give any turtle on the sand plenty of room. The County warns of hazardous footing, waves and currents.
The park is closed; check County of Hawaiʻi news for reopening.
