Puakō Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve

Waikoloa

A petroglyph field in South Kohala at Mauna Lani Resort, reached by the Malama Trail near Holoholokai.

The Puako petroglyph field is in South Kohala, on the north side of Mauna Lani Resort, where the County lists Holoholokai and Puako Petroglyph Parks, and the Malama Trail leads to the petroglyph field near Holoholokai. The National Park Service's National Register records list the area as the Puako Petroglyph Archeological District. At the parks the County lists a hike to the petroglyph field, parking, accessible restrooms, showers and trash cans, and it warns of hazardous footing, currents and waves. Stay on the trail and do not touch, walk on or make rubbings of the carvings.
