Lapakahi State Historical Park

Hawi

The partly restored remains of an ancient Hawaiian coastal settlement on the North Kohala coast, with a self-guided interpretive trail.

Lapakahi State Historical Park, on the North Kohala coast, keeps the partly restored remains of an ancient Hawaiian coastal settlement. A self-guided path, the Lapakahi Village Interpretive Trail, leads through the site and explains traditional Hawaiian life. The County calls it a culturally sensitive area, and the ocean in front of it is a marine preserve with regulated activities. State Parks lists the park as closed, citing fallen trees on the park page and tropical cyclone recovery on its notices page, so check that notices page before you go. When it is open, there is a restroom but no drinking water; fishing, pets, alcohol and smoking are not allowed; and State Parks warns of a dangerous shorebreak and strong current.

Local tip

Closed by State Parks (fallen trees, tropical cyclone recovery); check the State Parks notices page before you go.
