Waikoloa Petroglyph Field

Waikoloa

Stone carvings preserved within Waikoloa Beach Resort, on a marked trail near Kings' Shops.

The Waikoloa petroglyphs are stone carvings preserved within Waikoloa Beach Resort, along a marked trail near the gas station at Kings' Shops. Hawaiian originally had no written form, and some petroglyphs are thought to be astronomical symbols, travel markers or records of historic events. The resort offers free guided walks on the trail from Thursday to Sunday mornings. The carvings are fragile, so stay on the trail and do not go close for photos or make rubbings. The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, an ancient coastal path, also runs through the resort; do not move rocks, since damage to the trail or sites along it is subject to penalties.

Local tip

Stay on the marked trail; no close-up photos or rubbings.
