Kamehameha Birth Site

No admission fee (National Park Service listing)Hawi

The birthplace of Kamehameha I, in Kohala Historical Sites State Monument, south of Moʻokini Heiau in North Kohala.

The Kamehameha I Birthsite, also called the Kapakai Royal Housing Complex, is part of Kohala Historical Sites State Monument, south of Moʻokini Heiau, which stands at the northern tip of Hawaiʻi Island. Kamehameha I was born here, and he later stayed here while conducting ceremonies at Moʻokini Heiau. State Parks describes the birthsite as a memorial to the king who united the island chiefdoms into a kingdom. It is rare in the Hawaiian Islands for historians to know the exact location of both a royal housing complex and its heiau, as they do here. The road in, off Upolu Airport Road and the Akoni Pule Highway, is a rough dirt road, and the National Park Service recommends four-wheel drive. There is no drinking water, and pets, alcohol, camping and smoking are not allowed.
