Pololu Valley Lookout

Hawi· Moderate trail per Nā Ala Hele; steep, with slippery rocks and falling rock hazards.

A lookout at the end of the road in North Kohala over Pololū Valley, its black sand beach and the northeastern coast.

The Pololū Valley Lookout sits at the end of the road in North Kohala, with a small parking lot. It looks over the green cliffs of Pololū Valley, the northeastern coastline, small islets offshore and a black sand beach at the valley mouth. A steep trail, rated moderate by Nā Ala Hele, runs down to the valley floor and the beach. Nā Ala Hele lists slippery rocks, dangerous cliffs, falling rocks, flash floods, dangerous shorebreak, rip currents and strong currents, and swimming is discouraged. The valley floor holds iwi kūpuna, ancestral remains, and Protect Pololū ʻOhana, a group of mostly lineal descendants of Pololū, was named to lead volunteer upkeep of the trail and valley on a maintenance day, so stay on the trail and treat the place with respect. DLNR has closed the trail, lookout and parking area for a maintenance day before, so watch for notices.
