Laupāhoehoe Point Beach Park is a County park on Laupahoehoe Point Road on the Hamakua Coast. It has a large grass play field, a rocky shoreline, pavilions, barbecue pits and restrooms, and camping needs a permit. People come to fish, kayak, sail and picnic. In a tsunami set off by an earthquake in Alaska, waves destroyed the school at Laupāhoehoe. That tsunami took many lives across Hawaiʻi. The boat ramp is closed because of unsafe conditions, with no reopening date while a breakwater repair is pending. The County warns of hazardous currents, waves and boat traffic, and high surf can make the ocean unsafe for swimming.
