Travel from lush rainforests and towering waterfalls to volcanic lava fields and the summit of active Kīlauea on this full-day cross-island adventure with The Volcano Van. With a maximum of just 6 guests, this intimate small-group tour moves at a comfortable, flexible pace with plenty of time for photos, short walks, and real exploration — not just quick roadside stops.
The day begins along the scenic Hāmākua Coast, where deep valleys and sea cliffs meet rainforest and ocean views. Stop at Laupāhoehoe Point to witness powerful Pacific waves crashing against dramatic coastal cliffs, then walk through a fern-filled rainforest to ʻAkaka Falls, one of Hawaiʻi's most iconic waterfalls plunging 442 feet into a lush gulch. The route follows portions of the historic Old Māmalahoa Highway through quiet plantation towns before heading south to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
At the park, explore Kīlauea's summit region including volcanic craters, steam vents, lava fields, and native ʻōhiʻa forests. Stops are adjusted based on weather, visibility, and current volcanic conditions to ensure the best possible experience. The return route depends on your accommodation — guests heading to Waikoloa or Kohala travel over Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, while Kona-bound guests follow the southern coast with a stop at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach to see Hawaiian green sea turtles.
Lunch, snacks, drinks, and national park entrance fees are all included. The tour is suitable for families and guests of varying fitness levels — walks are short and the pace adapts to your group. Pickup is available from hotels and vacation rentals in Kona, Waikoloa, and Kohala. Duration is approximately 8–9 hours.
