Makalawena lies between the Awakeʻe and Mahaiʻula sections of Kekaha Kai State Park, but it is not part of the park: the land belongs to Kamehameha Schools. The State owns the shore below the high water mark and the public trails through Makalawena, and keeps public access open along them. The State has put in no facilities here, so bring water and take everything out with you. Kapoʻikai, also called ʻŌpaeʻula, a wetland pond, is in Makalawena, and anchialine ponds line this stretch of coast. Next door, the Awakeʻe section is reached on foot along the shore or by a very rough four-wheel-drive road.
On foot on public trails; no facilities.
