Mauna Lani Beach (49 Black Sand)
Waikoloa• Kohala Coast
About This Place
Mauna Lani Beach combines black volcanic sand with calm, protected waters on the Big Island's Kohala Coast. This pocket beach sits between two luxury resorts, providing a quieter alternative to the area's crowded white sand beaches. The black sand comes from ancient lava flows and creates striking contrast against the turquoise water.
The protected bay stays relatively calm and shallow near shore, making it suitable for families with young children. Snorkeling proves productive along the rocky edges where tropical fish gather around coral formations. The volcanic sand gets extremely hot under direct sun, so bring reef-safe shoes or thick sandals for comfortable walking.
Pack plenty of water and sunscreen since shade remains limited to a few scattered palm trees. The small parking lot, accessed through the Mauna Lani Resort area, fills up by 10am on most days. Arrive before 9am to secure parking and experience cooler sand temperatures. No entrance fees apply, but respect the resort properties flanking the public beach access.
The bay's protected nature generally creates gentle conditions, though standard ocean safety precautions apply. The black sand retains heat much longer than regular sand, so even late afternoon visits mean scorching surfaces underfoot until sunset.
Morning hours from 7am to 10am offer the most comfortable sand temperatures and guaranteed parking. Afternoon shade appears minimal after 2pm when the sun moves overhead. This beach provides the chance to experience distinctive volcanic sand without the dangerous surf conditions typical of the Big Island's other black sand beaches like Punaluu or new formations near active lava flows.
