Puna reaches from the summit of Kīlauea east to the sea, and lava has remade parts of it in recent memory. Lava from Kīlauea covered Kalapana and Kaimū, and there is no black sand beach to reach there any more. In a later eruption, lava filled Kapoho Bay and the tide pools of the former Waiʻōpae marine life conservation district. Lava Tree State Monument has a short loop trail through a forest of lava tree molds, open daily in daylight with no entrance fee.
