Pine Trees

Kailua-KonaKona Coast

About This Place

Pine Trees ranks among Kailua-Kona's most accessible shore diving spots, drawing both beginners and experienced divers to its protected bay and abundant marine life. The site takes its name from the ironwood trees that line the rocky shoreline just south of town. You'll enter from a lava rock platform where calm, clear waters typically provide 60 to 100 feet of visibility. Depths range from shallow tidepools to 35 feet, making this ideal for new divers or anyone wanting a relaxed underwater session. Green sea turtles patrol the area regularly, while white tip reef sharks, eels, and schools of tropical fish move through the coral formations and lava tubes. Entry requires careful movement across sharp lava rock, so sturdy dive boots are essential. Take your time navigating in and out. The protected location means minimal current on most days, though morning dives before 10am offer the calmest conditions and clearest water before afternoon trade winds arrive. Park along Ali'i Drive in the small dirt area near the ironwood trees. Space fills quickly on weekends, so arrive early. No entry fees apply for shore diving. Facilities are minimal, so bring water, snacks, and shade. The closest dive shops in Kailua-Kona rent equipment and offer guided trips. Watch for sea urchins in the shallows and always dive with a buddy. The lava rock becomes extremely slippery when wet, particularly during entry and exit. Check local surf conditions before heading out, as winter swells from December through March can occasionally disrupt the normally protected waters.
