Crescent Beach Dive

Kailua-KonaKona Coast

About This Place

Crescent Beach Dive sits along the Kona coast where calm, protected waters create ideal conditions for underwater exploration. This crescent-shaped bay offers easy shore access through a small sandy beach, making it perfect for beginning divers and snorkelers who want to avoid challenging surf entries. The dive site features a gradual slope from shallow coral gardens to deeper volcanic formations at 30-40 feet. Green sea turtles frequently graze on algae along the rocky bottom, while schools of yellow tangs and parrotfish navigate the coral heads. The bay's protection from prevailing winds keeps visibility consistently good, often reaching 60-80 feet. Beginning and intermediate divers appreciate the site's forgiving nature and reliable marine life encounters. Advanced divers might find it too mellow unless they're introducing nervous companions to Big Island diving or seeking a relaxing second dive. Arrive with full scuba gear or snorkel equipment, reef-safe sunscreen, and water shoes for the rocky shoreline. The small dirt parking area accommodates about eight cars and fills quickly on weekends. No facilities or gear rentals exist on site, so plan accordingly. Morning dives from 7-10 am offer the calmest conditions before trade winds pick up. Afternoon sessions work when winds stay light. Weekend crowds arrive after 10 am, so early arrivals get the best experience. Watch for occasional strong currents near the bay's mouth during high tide changes. The entry rocks become slippery when wet. This site requires basic swimming skills and comfort in open water.
