Old Airport Dive

Kailua-KonaKona Coast

About This Place

Old Airport Dive sits where Kailua-Kona's former runway meets the ocean, creating one of the Big Island's most accessible shore diving spots. The old concrete runway provides structure that attracts green sea turtles, white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of tropical fish. Calm, protected waters make this ideal for beginners and underwater photographers seeking easy entry without fighting surf. Park free in the large lot at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, open daily from 7 AM to 8 PM. The entry point requires a 100-yard walk across sharp lava rock, so wear sturdy shoes and carry reef-safe gear to the rocky shoreline entry. Water depth reaches 35 feet, with most marine life concentrated in the first 20 feet where sunlight penetrates best. Dive between 7 AM and 10 AM for optimal visibility before afternoon trade winds stir up sediment. Avoid the site during high surf warnings when waves crash over the entry rocks, typically during winter months from December through February. The location works well for snorkeling, though divers see more variety by exploring the deeper coral formations beyond 15 feet. Bring your own equipment or rent from Kailua-Kona shops within five miles. No facilities exist at the site, so pack water, snacks, and shade since the black lava rock reflects intense sun. Watch for occasional parallel currents running along shore that can surprise inexperienced divers, though they rarely cause serious problems. Turtle encounters happen frequently, but maintain the legally required six-foot distance. The combination of easy access, reliable morning conditions, and diverse marine life makes this a Big Island diving essential for all skill levels.
