A 9-hour hiking-focused volcano tour departing from Hilo that explores Kīlauea on foot. The day begins at Kaumana Caves, part of the lava tube system from the 1881 eruption that reached within 1.5 miles of downtown Hilo. Inside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by native birdsong before setting off on the main hike — approximately three miles along the Halema'uma'u Trail. The trail descends from behind the historic Volcano House through ancient tree fern forests to the caldera floor, where evidence of the 2018 eruption is visible, including the massive 1,000-foot-deep pit left when the lava lake drained. The route skirts the caldera edge, climbs roughly 400 feet to Byron Ledge with sweeping views, and continues through forest past Pu'u Pua'i and Kīlauea Iki to Waldron Overlook. After the hike, explore additional park sites including the Mauna Ulu lava flow — where you can find Pele's tears and lava trees — and the Nāhuku lava tube hidden in the rainforest. The day ends with dinner at a local restaurant in Volcano Village. When an active summit eruption is occurring, the guide returns to the park after dark to view the lava glow. Lunch and dinner included. All ages welcome, with pickup from Hilo. A 48-hour cancellation notice is required.
