About This Experience

Go behind three locked gates onto private land on the slopes of Hualālai — Kona's own volcano — for a guided hiking adventure through terrain that most visitors never see. Hawaii Forest & Trail's Hidden Craters Hike offers exclusive access to volcanic features, native forest, and an intact lava tube on the upper slopes of this technically active volcano, whose last eruption ended in 1801.

Over approximately five hours, your guide leads you on a 3 to 4-mile moderate hike ranging from sea level to 6,000 feet, with 800 to 1,000 feet of elevation gain and descent. Stand at the edge of precipitous volcanic craters that plunge deep into the earth, walk alongside a 200-year-old lava flow, and examine spatter cones, fissures, and collapsed pit craters. The highlight is descending into an intact lava tube unaltered by human development — accessible via earthen steps with a rope assist and enough natural light to appreciate the cave's geological features.

The trail traverses native Hawaiian forest on uneven volcanic terrain with some steep sections, making sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots essential. Trekking poles and rain jackets are provided, along with snacks and beverages. Bring a sweatshirt or light jacket — temperatures at higher elevations are noticeably cooler than the coast.

Groups are limited to 10 guests for a personalized experience. Ages 8 and up are welcome. Meet at the Hawaii Forest & Trail office in Kailua-Kona for departure. This tour requires a minimum of four guests to operate.
