Lace up your hiking boots for an immersive day of trail exploration at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park with Hawaii Forest & Trail's dedicated hiking adventure. Unlike the company's sightseeing-oriented volcano tours, this experience is designed specifically for active visitors who want to cover ground on foot — hiking up to three miles through the park's most dramatic landscapes with an interpretive naturalist guide.
Your guide selects the best trails based on current volcanic activity, park conditions, and your group's interests, taking you through ancient lava fields, along crater rims, past steam vents, and into lava tubes. Learn about the rich geology, cultural history, and native ecology of this UNESCO World Heritage Site as you traverse terrain that most visitors only see from roadside pullouts.
The day begins with a scenic drive via Saddle Road in a comfortable Mercedes Sprinter tour van. A fresh picnic-style deli lunch is served in the park, along with snacks and chilled beverages throughout the day. All gear is provided: trekking poles, day packs, raingear, bug repellent, and sunscreen. Park entrance fees are included.
The adventure runs approximately 10 hours from Kona or 5 hours from Hilo, with pickup available from multiple locations on both sides of the island. Ages 6 and up are welcome. Groups are limited to 12 guests. If three miles of hiking sounds like more than you'd prefer, consider the Volcano, Chocolate & Waterfalls tour for a less hiking-intensive volcano experience.
