Children ages 6 and older are welcome on this hiking adventure, and the tour is rated moderate. Kids must be able to walk up to 3 miles on uneven terrain without assistance. If your child is under age 10 and under 4 feet 9 inches tall, Hawaii law requires a child safety or booster seat, which Hawaii Forest & Trail provides upon request. Parents should keep in mind that trails can be cool, wet, or muddy depending on conditions at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Guests who cannot manage a minimum of 3 miles on uneven ground - children included - are encouraged to consider the operator's Volcano, Chocolate, & Waterfalls Adventure instead, which may be a better fit for less mobile participants.

The tour includes all gear you need for the day, along with food and drinks. Trekking poles, day packs, raingear, bug repellent, and sunscreen are all provided. You will also receive a fresh picnic deli-style lunch, snacks, and chilled beverages, so you do not need to pack your own food. Because gear is supplied, the main items you need to bring yourself are comfortable closed-toe walking shoes or hiking shoes, a reusable water bottle, long pants, a light jacket or sweatshirt, and personal sun protection such as a hat and sunglasses. Gratuity for your guide is not included and is left to your discretion.

Active lava viewing cannot be guaranteed on this volcano hiking adventure because eruption activity is subject to change at any moment. Kilauea's current eruption in Halemaumau crater began on December 23, 2024, and has seen 40 or more episodes separated by pauses, making conditions very dynamic. Hawaii Forest & Trail recommends contacting their office or checking the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory's Eruption Update page for the latest information before your tour date. Your naturalist guide will choose the best available trails on the day based on current Park activity and conditions. Regardless of eruption status, the itinerary covers ancient lava fields, steam vents, volcanic crater views, and native forest, offering a full picture of the Park's geology and cultural significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will receive a full refund if you cancel this volcano hiking adventure at least 24 hours before it begins. Cancellations made within that 24-hour window and no-shows are charged the full tour amount, so it is important to plan ahead if your schedule or fitness level changes before your departure date. There is also a tour minimum of four guests required for the adventure to operate. If your booking does not meet that minimum, Hawaii Forest & Trail will notify you at least 24 hours in advance and give you the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. Private tour bookings have a longer cancellation window of 72 hours for a full refund.

The total adventure is approximately 10 hours if you depart from the Kona area, making it a true full-day experience. The van departs Kona headquarters at 7:30 AM, arrives at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park between 10:00 and 10:30 AM, and returns to Kona between 5:00 and 5:30 PM. Guests joining from Waikoloa can expect roughly 9 to 9.5 hours, while those departing from Hilo spend about 5 hours total. Transportation runs in a comfortable Mercedes Sprinter tour van via Saddle Road, and the park entry fee is included so there are no additional costs at the gate. Meeting locations span Kona, Waikoloa, and Hilo, giving guests on different parts of the island a convenient starting point for the day.
