About This Experience

A 7-hour guided volcano tour departing from Hilo that takes in the Big Island's volcanic landscape from the coast to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Starting with a drive through historic Hilo town, the tour heads to Kalapana — a fishing village destroyed by lava — where you'll hike across the lava flow to a new black sand beach at Kaimū. Along the way, stop at the Star of the Sea Painted Church, a decommissioned church on the National Register of Historic Places that was moved twice by the community to save it from advancing lava in 1990. A National Park Service–certified guide provides narration on the area's volcanology, geology, lava flows, and native flora and fauna throughout the journey. At Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, visit the Kīlauea Visitor Center, Kīlauea Iki Crater Overlook, and Steaming Bluffs. Stop at the historic Volcano House for views of Kīlauea Caldera, and hike to the cracks and sinkholes in the paved roads left by the 2018 eruption. Dinner is included. All ages welcome, with pickup from Hilo. A 48-hour cancellation notice is required for a full refund.
