Embark on an unforgettable 4-mile kayak journey through Hilo Bay and up the Wailuku River on this advanced-level guided adventure where Hawaiian history, mythology, and natural beauty come together. Designed for experienced paddlers, this tour offers both challenge and reward as you explore one of East Hawai'i's most iconic waterways.
Begin on the calm waters of Hilo Bay, paddling past Coconut Island (Moku Ola), a sacred place of refuge in ancient times where, according to legend, the ill could swim around the island three times to be healed. Your guide shares tales of warriors, gods, and the deep cultural significance of these storied waters.
Enjoy sweeping views of historic Hilo Town as you paddle beneath the famous Singing Bridge — named for the humming sound it produces as cars pass overhead. Watch for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) gliding through the lagoon as you continue up the Wailuku River, where lush scenery, waterfalls, and banyan trees frame the route. Adventurous guests may even try swinging from overhanging branches into the refreshing lagoon below.
Along the way, learn about Hilo's fascinating past — from its sugar plantation days to the powerful tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 that reshaped the coastline. This journey is equal parts cultural exploration, workout, and pure Hawaiian magic.
