Whittington Beach Park

Pahala

About This Place

Whittington Beach Park sits along the rocky Ka'u coastline, 20 minutes south of Pahala town. This rugged spot attracts locals and adventurous visitors who prefer dramatic black lava rock formations over typical sandy beaches. The park offers excellent tide pooling opportunities when ocean conditions are calm, revealing colorful sea life trapped in natural rock basins. Strong currents and rough surf make swimming dangerous here most days. The rocky shoreline creates powerful waves that crash unpredictably, so keep a safe distance from the water's edge. Experienced snorkelers sometimes enter the water during very calm conditions, but only locals familiar with the area should attempt this. The park works best for picnicking, tide pooling, and enjoying ocean views. Covered pavilions provide shade and picnic tables, making it popular with families for weekend gatherings. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, sturdy shoes with good grip for walking on wet rocks, and plenty of water since facilities are basic. Free parking is available in a small lot adjacent to the pavilions. The park stays open 24 hours, but visit during daylight hours for safety. Early morning between 7-9 AM offers the calmest conditions for tide pooling, while late afternoon from 4-6 PM provides dramatic lighting for photography. Winter months from November through March bring larger swells and rougher conditions. This park suits visitors who enjoy raw coastal scenery and don't mind skipping traditional beach activities. The drive down takes you through rural Ka'u district with views of Mauna Loa's slopes. Come for the solitude and striking volcanic coastline rather than swimming or sunbathing.
