About this tour
This working salt farm sits within Hawaii's Ocean Science and Technology Park on the Kona coast. Visitors check in at the retail store, then meet a guide for an orientation before walking to the shoreline to learn how deep ocean water is brought ashore and processed into hand-harvested salt. The guided route continues through the harvesting area and into the hothouse, where the solar evaporation process turns mineral-rich seawater into salt crystals. Guides also cover the cultural role of pa'akai, the Hawaiian word for salt, in island traditions.
The tour is conducted in English and is partially accessible. A short walk to the shore and up to the upper salt deck requires some mobility, while the rest of the route is accessible. ADA restrooms and parking are available on site.
The tasting portion covers pure, flavored, and smoked Kona salts paired with fresh fruit and vegetables, along with a sample of deep ocean magnesium mineral water. An optional foot soak using chilled, mineral-rich deep ocean water is available as a paid add-on for those who want to extend the visit.
