Walk through a working abalone aquaculture farm on the Kona Coast and see firsthand how these prized shellfish are raised from tiny seed stock to full-grown adults over a span of two months to ten years. A knowledgeable farm guide explains the operation's history, the deep-water research behind it, breeding techniques, and how the facility maintains its 100% organic and sustainable practices.
The one-hour tour is hands-on — you can hold abalone at different growth stages and take photos throughout. You'll also visit the organic dulse seaweed tanks where the farm grows the superfood that feeds its abalone (and happens to be a nutritious snack for humans too). The tour wraps up with a tasting of grilled abalone in the shell, canned abalone, and sea grapes — the farm's edible seaweed.
Tours run seven days a week and are open to all ages. Note that the tour includes shellfish tasting, so guests with shellfish allergies should plan accordingly. The farm is located on Makako Bay Drive in Kailua-Kona.
