Explore the full extent of the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary on this immersive 2.5-hour guided tour — the only tour that covers both the Pan-Tropical Forest and the Montane-Tropical Forest trails, including higher-elevation areas that no other tour visits. Walk approximately one mile of sacred trails through a privately stewarded forest that has been family-forested with love since 1982.
Surrounded by rare trees, towering ferns, palms, bamboo, and tropical flowers, your naturalist guide shares the story of this unique ecosystem — its climate, volcanic geology, reforestation history, and the delicate ecological balance that sustains it. Listen for the songs of native Hawaiian honeycreepers overhead and witness active reforestation efforts in action. This is also the forest that inspired James Cameron and the cast of Avatar.
The sanctuary sits at elevation above Kailua-Kona, where cloud forest conditions create temperatures 10–15 degrees cooler than the coast. Rain is common and part of the experience — come prepared with a rain jacket and closed-toe shoes. The trail traverses natural volcanic rock and tree root terrain with about 200 feet of elevation change, so participants should be comfortable walking and standing for up to 3 hours without sitting. Walking sticks, bug spray, water, and photos are included.
Located just 15 minutes up the mountain from Kona Keahole Airport and 20 minutes from downtown Kailua-Kona. Tours are offered daily with a maximum of 16 guests. Arrive at least 10 minutes early — tours start on time. Kamaʻāina and student rates available.
