About this tour
Canoe Adventure by Hulakai puts participants in a traditional Hawaiian canoe at ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay on the Big Island. The tour meets at the ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay Canoe Club, next to Lava Lava Beach Club, where a lifeguard-certified steersman teaches proper paddling technique and helps the crew find a common rhythm before heading toward a black sand beach. There are no motors, so the paddling effort comes entirely from the group. The pace can be leisurely or more vigorous, and participants set that tone themselves.
The tour carries a moderate difficulty rating and suits both beginners and experienced paddlers, since no prior experience is required. Food and drinks are not included, and hotel pickup is not available, so arranging transportation to the meeting point is necessary. The tour runs on a set schedule of select weekdays and is weather dependent, meaning conditions at the bay can affect availability. Bringing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle is recommended for comfort on the water.
