About This Experience

Discover the calm, scenic beauty of Hilo from the water on this 1-hour guided kayak paddle along the gentle Wailoa River. Perfect for beginners and families, this relaxing adventure combines easy paddling with fascinating local history and lush tropical scenery.

Launch from the Wailoa boat ramp and glide upriver through a peaceful landscape, paddling beneath graceful Japanese-style bridges and weaving between overhanging tree branches. "Wailoa" means "long water" in Hawaiian, and the river's gentle flow makes it ideal for paddlers of all skill levels. Along the way, spot native birds, fish, and unique coastal flora that thrive in this serene environment.

Midway through the tour, pause near the iconic King Kamehameha Statue while your guide shares stories about Hilo's past — from the ancient Hawaiian kingdom to the powerful tsunamis that reshaped the land. You'll also visit an arboretum home to some of the largest tree species outside of Africa, recognized by the Tree Association for their remarkable size and diversity.

Tour includes kayak, paddles, safety gear, professional guide, bottled water, and light snacks. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable water shoes, a towel, and a camera.

Ages 8 and up. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Meets at 1717 Kamehameha Ave, Hilo. Cancellation with full refund available up to 48 hours in advance.
