About This Experience

Hike one of the Big Island's original foot trails — used by the first Polynesian settlers — on this guided Pu'u O'o trail adventure. This moderately challenging loop trail traverses a stunning mosaic of landscapes, from old-growth koa and ōhi'a forest to barren lava fields and everything in between.

The Pu'u O'o trail is one of the best birdwatching opportunities on the Big Island. The native forest along the trail is home to several endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers and forest birds, including the 'i'iwi, 'akiapōlā'au, 'ākepa, 'elepaio, 'ōma'o, 'apapane, and 'amakihi. For birdwatching-focused hikes, the route is adjusted to cover approximately 4-6 miles through the best birding areas rather than completing the full loop.

Your naturalist guide provides expert interpretation of the trail's ecology, geology, and cultural significance throughout the hike. Whether you're a serious birder or simply love immersing yourself in Hawai'i's native forest, this is a rare opportunity to experience pristine habitat away from the crowds.

Private Mercedes van transportation, snacks, beverages, Patagonia rain gear, Nikon binoculars, hiking poles, and professional photography included. Up to 7 guests per tour.
