Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs Trail

About This Place
The Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs Trail crosses black lava rock to reach one of Hawaii's largest collections of ancient rock carvings. This easy 1.4-mile round-trip walk takes about an hour, following a marked path over flat pahoehoe lava flows in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
More than 23,000 petroglyphs cover this sacred site, created by Native Hawaiians over several centuries. Most show piko holes - circular depressions where families placed their newborns' umbilical cords to ensure long life and connection to the land. You'll see carved canoes, human figures, and symbols that document daily life and spiritual beliefs.
The trail suits most fitness levels, though the uneven lava rock demands sturdy closed-toe shoes with aggressive tread. Hiking boots or trail runners work best - flip-flops will leave you slipping and sliding. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat since shade doesn't exist on this exposed lava field. Morning visits before 10am or late afternoon after 3pm provide cooler temperatures and superior lighting for photographs.
Park entrance fees apply as part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park admission. The trailhead sits along Chain of Craters Road, about 20 minutes south of Kilauea Visitor Center, with a small parking area that fills by 9am during busy periods from December through March.
Stay on the marked boardwalk near the petroglyphs to protect these irreplaceable cultural treasures. The lava rock cuts like glass and turns slippery when wet from afternoon trade wind showers. This trail connects you with Hawaii's indigenous heritage while showcasing the raw geology of active volcanism.
