Devastation Trail is a paved path in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park across ground buried by falling cinder from the lava fountains of the Kīlauea Iki eruption. Today you can see life returning to the once devastated area. It starts at either the Puʻupuaʻi parking lot or the Devastation Trail parking lot, both off Crater Rim Drive East. The park rates it easy and wheelchair and stroller accessible, though some sections are steep. Stay on the paved trail, and do not climb the Puʻupuaʻi cinder cone. Threatened nēnē (Hawaiian geese) frequent the area, so park with care and never feed them. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and rain gear. The Keanakākoʻi area is temporarily closed for volcanic unrest, but the Devastation parking lot remains open.
