About This Place
The Crater Rim Trail circles Kilauea Caldera's rim for 11 miles, putting you face-to-face with one of Earth's most active volcanoes. This loop trail requires no advanced hiking skills yet delivers front-row views of volcanic power in action.
Paved sections accommodate families and casual walkers, though portions cross jagged lava rock requiring sturdy hiking boots. You'll walk past steaming vents releasing sulfur-scented gases, colorful mineral deposits, and dramatic cliff edges overlooking the massive crater. On clear mornings, Mauna Loa's summit appears on the horizon.
Start before 8am or after 4pm to dodge midday heat and tour bus crowds. The trail opens 24 hours, but volcanic activity closes sections without warning. Check current conditions at Kilauea Visitor Center before heading out. Parking at popular spots like Jaggar Museum overlook fills by 10am.
Pack water, sunscreen, and a light jacket since temperatures drop 10-15 degrees near steam vents and at the 4,000-foot elevation. Volcanic gases irritate respiratory systems, so people with breathing issues should position themselves upwind of active vents. Afternoon rain showers between 1-4pm are common, especially from October through April.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park charges $30 per vehicle for seven-day access. The terrain shifts constantly as ongoing volcanic activity creates new formations and occasionally destroys trail sections. Rangers update trail conditions and volcanic hazard levels at each trailhead. This active geological laboratory transforms continuously, ensuring no two visits look identical. Current eruption status determines which viewpoints offer the most dramatic volcanic displays.
