Head south around Mauna Loa — Earth's largest volcano — to explore Kīlauea from summit to shore on this 8-hour shared tour with The Volcano Van. With a maximum of 6 guests, this small-group adventure takes a volcanic-focused route through coffee country, lava fields, black sand beaches, and the heart of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
The day begins passing through Kona Coffee country on the western slopes of Mauna Loa, where some of the world's finest coffee is grown. As the route swings south, vast lava fields mark one of the most volcanically active areas on the island. A stop at the Punaluʻu Sweet Bread Bakery picks up lunch and fresh malasadas before continuing to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where Hawaiian green sea turtles are often spotted basking on the warm volcanic sand.
At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, explore Kīlauea's summit region with its massive caldera, volcanic craters, steam vents, and surrounding native forest. Your guide provides context on the island's geology and ongoing volcanic activity as you take in the views and walk the trails. A visit to Kaumana Caves offers a look inside an actual lava tube — a former conduit of molten rock from Mauna Loa — and insight into how these formations helped shape the island.
The return trip crosses Saddle Road, climbing to nearly 6,800 feet between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa through a dramatic progression of ecosystems — rainforest, cloud forest, high desert, and open prairie. Pickup is available from Kona, Waikoloa, and Kohala accommodations. The itinerary may be adjusted based on conditions and group preferences. Minimum 2 guests required.
