This 9-hour private volcano and waterfall adventure starts from Hilo and takes up to 6 guests on a full cross-island journey through rainforests, sea cliffs, waterfalls, and Kīlauea's volcanic landscape.
From Hilo, travel along the famous Hāmākua Coast on the eastern flank of Mauna Kea, where thousands of years of erosion have carved deep valleys and steep cliffs into the mountainside. Stop at Laupāhoehoe Point for dramatic views of the Pacific crashing against rugged coastal pinnacles, then continue through jungle roads to 'Akaka Falls — a 442-foot waterfall plunging into Kolekole gulch below. Grab lunch at Hilo Sharks in Honomu for fresh local wraps.
After lunch, follow some of the island's most scenic backroads through lush jungle gorges and past ocean vistas before heading to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Explore Kīlauea's summit caldera, then drive Chain of Craters Road along the east rift zone, passing pit craters, scorched earth, steaming ground, and lava flows old and new. Your guide provides plenty of time to explore and learn about the geology both above and below the surface.
The return follows Saddle Road, climbing to nearly 6,800 feet through rainforests, cloud forests, high desert, and prairies between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa — with stunning views of both towering volcanoes.
Lunch, snacks, and drinks are included along with all national park entrance fees. The itinerary is flexible and may be adjusted based on conditions and interests.
