About This Place
Onomea Bay Overlook delivers one of the Big Island's most photogenic coastal views from a convenient roadside perch along the scenic Pepeekeo drive north of Hilo. This elevated viewpoint frames a perfect crescent of black sand beach backed by dense tropical forest, with the Pacific stretching to the horizon.
The overlook sits about 100 feet above the bay, offering photographers and sightseers an unobstructed angle on the dramatic coastline. Morning light works best here, typically between 8am and 11am, when the sun illuminates the bay without creating harsh shadows. Afternoon visits can be spectacular too, especially when surf is up and waves crash against the rocky shoreline.
Getting here requires no hiking - just pull off Highway 19 into the small gravel parking area that fits about six cars. Arrive early during peak tourist seasons from December through March and June through August when spaces fill quickly. No admission fees apply, and the site stays accessible 24 hours daily.
Bring a camera with a good zoom lens to capture details of the beach below. The trade winds can be strong here, so secure loose items and consider a light jacket even on warm days. The viewing area has no barriers, so keep children close and watch your footing near the cliff edge on the uneven ground.
This stop works well for families, photographers, and anyone wanting a quick dose of natural beauty without strenuous effort. Plan 15-30 minutes to fully appreciate the view and snap photos. The nearby Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden makes an excellent follow-up destination just two miles south.
