This statue of King Kamehameha I stands in Kapaau, in North Kohala, the district where he was born. The Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawaii commissioned it in the nineteenth century. The statue is painted, and a resolution of the Twenty-ninth State Legislature said it is repainted every seven to ten years under the guidance of professional sculptors and that the North Kohala community had raised funds to maintain it. The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts later adopted the statue and supported the community's conservation of it.
