About This Place

Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens occupies 12 acres of authentic Hawaiian rainforest in Hilo, making it the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. This family-run facility houses over 80 animal species, including Hawaiian nēnē geese, Bengal tigers, lemurs, and colorful tropical birds that thrive in the humid, 80-degree climate. Paved paths wind through the property with gentle hills and occasional muddy spots after Hilo's frequent rain showers. The compact size allows you to see everything in 90 minutes to two hours, perfect for families with young children and anyone wanting to observe animals in their lush, natural habitat. Visit between 9am and 11am for peak animal activity before afternoon heat causes them to rest. The zoo operates Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm, closed Mondays except holidays. Admission costs $5 for adults and $3 for children, with free on-site parking available. Pack a light rain jacket since Hilo receives over 120 inches of rain annually and showers start suddenly. Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip for potentially wet surfaces. The high humidity and thick canopy create a greenhouse effect, so dress in breathable layers. The genuine rainforest habitat sets this zoo apart from typical mainland facilities. Native bird calls mix with exotic animal sounds while tropical plants create natural barriers between exhibits. Bengal tigers pad through verdant enclosures while lemurs leap between actual rainforest trees. This authentic Hawaiian environment makes animal viewing feel like exploring native forest, where the boundaries between wild habitat and zoo exhibits blur completely.
