About this tour

Watch the sun set from nearly 14,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean on Taikobo Hawaii's Mauna Kea Sunset & Stars Tour. This 7- to 8-hour guided excursion takes you to the summit of Mauna Kea in a 4WD passenger van for approximately one hour of sunset viewing, followed by an hour of guided stargazing from one of the best astronomical observation sites in the world.

Mauna Kea's location in the center of Hawaii Island offers an unobstructed horizon, famously clear skies, and dry, crisp air - ideal conditions for both sunsets and stargazing. After dark, your guide uses a green laser and a Celestron computerized telescope to point out stars, constellations, and celestial objects.

A heavy-duty hooded parka is provided. Bring warm clothes including long pants, a sweater or hoodie, warm socks, and closed-toe shoes - temperatures at the summit can be near freezing. Light snacks and hot chocolate are included. Have a large lunch before the tour and bring your own water to help prevent altitude sickness.

Ages 13-80. A required $20 per person Maunakea Stewardship fee is added to the tour price. Tours run daily, weather permitting, with afternoon departure times that vary by season.

What should I wear and bring for the Mauna Kea Sunset & Stars Tour?

You must wear warm clothes including long pants, a sweater or hoodie, warm socks, and closed-toe shoes for this tour. The summit sits nearly 14,000 feet above sea level, so temperatures are far colder than the coast. A heavy-duty hooded parka is provided, but layering underneath is essential. The operator strongly encourages bringing your own water, since staying hydrated helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness and combats dehydration in the summit's dry climate. Alcohol is not allowed during the tour. Leave large luggage like suitcases behind, as there is no space for them in the 4WD passenger van used for transport.

Is the Mauna Kea tour suitable for children or older adults?

This tour is open to guests ages 13 through 80 only, due to the physical demands of high-altitude conditions at nearly 14,000 feet. Children 12 and under are not permitted on any departure. The age limit exists specifically because of health considerations related to the extreme altitude. Seniors aged 81 or older are not excluded entirely - they may participate through Taikobo Hawaii's Private Charter Tours, where guides can be more attentive to individual health needs during the ascent and time at the summit. If you are booking for a mixed-age group, check ages carefully before reserving spots.

Should I eat before joining the Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour?

You should eat a large lunch before the tour begins, since no meals are included and the operator specifically advises against eating heavily just before ascending to high altitude. A big meal combined with the rough road to the summit can cause nausea. Light snacks and hot chocolate are provided during the tour. The tour runs for 7 to 8 hours and returns late at night, so plan your post-tour food as well. Taikobo Hawaii notes that Kona has a few 24-hour stores if you need to grab something when you return. You are welcome to bring your own light snacks in addition to what is provided.

What is the cancellation policy for the Mauna Kea Sunset & Stars Tour?

The cancellation deadline depends on your group size - parties of 4 or fewer must cancel by noon Hawaii time the day before the tour, while parties of 5 or more must cancel by noon two days before. Private tours require notice three days in advance. Missing these windows results in a 100% charge. If Taikobo Hawaii cancels the tour due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, you will receive a full refund or credit. No-shows are charged the full tour price. The operator also reserves the right to cancel reservations that contain incorrect contact information, such as an invalid phone number or email address.

How much time do I actually spend at the Mauna Kea summit during this tour?

You spend approximately one hour at the summit during sunset and another approximately one hour on guided stargazing with a Celestron computerized telescope. The total tour runs 7 to 8 hours, with the remaining time covering travel and a break at the Onizuka Visitor Center before the final ascent. The tour departs in the early afternoon, with the exact time varying by season, and returns late at night. Your guide uses a green laser pointer alongside the computerized telescope to identify stars and constellations. Meeting points include Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa Beach Resort, and the Onizuka Visitor Center, with total duration varying slightly by pickup location.
