The summit sits nearly 14,000 feet above sea level, so temperatures are far colder than the coast. A heavy-duty hooded parka is provided, but layering underneath is essential. The operator strongly encourages bringing your own water, since staying hydrated helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness and combats dehydration in the summit's dry climate. Alcohol is not allowed during the tour. Leave large luggage like suitcases behind, as there is no space for them in the 4WD passenger van used for transport.

This tour is open to guests ages 13 through 80 only, due to the physical demands of high-altitude conditions at nearly 14,000 feet. Children 12 and under are not permitted on any departure. The age limit exists specifically because of health considerations related to the extreme altitude. Seniors aged 81 or older are not excluded entirely - they may participate through Taikobo Hawaii's Private Charter Tours, where guides can be more attentive to individual health needs during the ascent and time at the summit. You should eat a large lunch before the tour begins, since no meals are included and the operator specifically advises against eating heavily just before ascending to high altitude. A big meal combined with the rough road to the summit can cause nausea. Light snacks and hot chocolate are provided during the tour. The tour runs for 7 to 8 hours and returns late at night, so plan your post-tour food as well. Taikobo Hawaii notes that Kona has a few 24-hour stores if you need to grab something when you return.
