Kulaniapia Falls

Hilo

A waterfall on private property in Hilo, open by advance reservation, where swimming depends on river conditions.

Kulaniapia Falls is on private property on Kulaniapia Drive in Hilo, which the owners share with a limited number of guests each day and which also has off-the-grid places to stay. There is no access without an advance reservation, and visitors not staying overnight need a daypass. When the river is safe, you can swim, kayak and paddleboard under the falls, and the property also has trails, waterfall views and bamboo gardens. Staff decide each day whether the river is open, swimming may not be possible after heavy rain, and no lifeguard is on duty. Check in at the office and sign the liability waiver before you go down.

Local tip

Private property: advance reservation required, and a daypass for visitors not staying overnight; check in at the office.
