A braided lava tube system in Ocean View that you visit with a guide, by reservation.

Kula Kai Caverns is an old braided lava tube system in Ocean View, on the south side of the island. Hawaiians used these tubes as resource caves for water collection and shelter on journeys between the uplands and the sea. You visit with experienced guides, by reservation, Monday through Saturday; call ahead for a reservation and the gate access code, since the caverns sit inside a gated community. The Lighted Trail option is an easy walk for anyone who can walk up and down stairs. The Archeological option has stairs in and a ladder out, and the Extended Wild option goes beyond the lighted trail with helmets, lights, knee pads and gloves provided, for people in reasonable physical condition. Hurricane Lala caused heavy damage across Kaʻū, and a County emergency proclamation says roads and bridges along and near Hawaiʻi Belt Road were destroyed or damaged, so check road conditions before you drive.
