After two decades guiding visitors through Kona's waters, these experienced captains know there's nothing quite like the Manta Ray Night Snorkel Maheli Heli in Kailua-Kona. These magnificent creatures—some spanning 16 feet from wing to wing—gather here because of something special about our coastline. Plankton accumulates off the Kona shore, creating a natural feeding ground that draws manta rays into shallow waters after dark.
We depart Honokohau Harbor at 4:15 pm aboard the Maheli Heli, a vessel purpose-built for this experience. The eco-friendly engines minimize exhaust fumes which keeps guests from getting seasick, while our heavy-duty ladder extends four steps below the surface for easy water entry. Fresh warm water rinses await your return, and the cabin keeps your belongings secure and dry.
Captains Bill and Dan have spent twenty years perfecting these encounters. They know exactly where to position the boat and how to maintain respectful distances—because disturbing these gentle giants isn't an option. Whether you're comfortable snorkeling alongside them or prefer observing from deck, this adventure accommodates every comfort level.
The crew might even drop a line on the way to the manta site, adding a fishing element to your oceanic adventure. But the real magic happens underwater, where these graceful creatures perform their feeding ballet in the illuminated darkness.
This Manta Ray Night Snorkel Maheli Heli welcomes participants ages 7 and up. Observers pay from $105 per person, while snorkelers range from $115 (ages 7-12) to $125 (adults 13+). Your experience includes fresh fruit, water and drinks, treats, plus all snorkel gear.
