Kealakekua Bay Snorkeling on the Big Island

Kealakekua Bay is widely considered the best snorkeling destination in all of Hawaii — a protected marine life conservation district where pristine coral reefs, crystal-clear water with 100+ foot visibility, and an abundance of tropical fish create an underwater paradise. The bay is also one of Hawaii's most historically significant sites, marked by the Captain Cook Monument on its northern shore.

Snorkeling tours reach Kealakekua Bay by boat, kayak, or a combination of both. Catamaran and raft tours depart from Keauhou Bay and cruise south along the dramatic Kona Coast, often spotting spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and seasonal humpback whales along the way. Kayak tours offer a more active approach, paddling across the bay to the monument before snorkeling the reef below.

The reef at Kealakekua Bay is remarkably healthy and diverse, home to hundreds of species of tropical fish, moray eels, octopuses, and frequent green sea turtle visitors.
