Umauma Triple-Tier Waterfall Rappel and River Tour
This guided canyoneering experience follows the Umauma River on the Big Island, descending multiple waterfalls and swimming from pool to pool between rappel points. Island Mountain Guides leads participants through rappels, downriver swimming, and a jungle climb exit to complete the canyon route. The tour is rated moderate in difficulty and is beginner-accessible, though it is physically demanding. The experience begins at the Island Mountain Guides Umauma Falls location, next to the horses across the parking lot from the Umauma visitor center, where outfitting and a pre-tour briefing take place. No hotel pickup is available, so participants arrange their own transportation to the meeting point. All rappelling equipment, shoes, a helmet, a harness, and a flotation device are provided. Meals are not included. Swimming ability is required to participate. Children under the age shown on the booking page must be accompanied by an adult, and there are weight requirements listed on the page as well. Participants are advised to wear quick-dry athletic clothing such as a lightweight long-sleeve rashguard and board shorts rather than a small swimsuit.
Half Day Rock Climbing
Half Day Rock Climbing with Island Mountain Guides takes place on volcanic rock inside collapsed lava tube canyons on the Big Island. The tour meets at the Umauma Experience Visitor Center, where guides fit participants with gear before transporting the group to the climbing area. From there, climbers descend into a canyon alongside cascading waterfalls, then work their way back out by climbing routes on the canyon walls. All necessary equipment is provided, including helmets, harnesses, ropes, shoes, and hardware. Participants should bring outdoor-appropriate clothing (no skirts or dresses), water, and snacks. The activity is rated moderate and is open to beginners, though a higher level of physical fitness and some prior climbing experience, even from a gym, will make the trip more enjoyable. The tour is not recommended for those with impaired mobility or who are pregnant.
