Hawaii’s GOAT Experience: Mauna Kea Summit, Sunset & Stars
This Hawaii Island Holidays tour departs from Hilo and heads to the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset viewing, a visit to the research telescope complex, and a guided stargazing session. A guide provides historical and astronomical context throughout, covering the telescopes stationed at the summit and their role in science, including the instruments involved in capturing the first photograph of a black hole. After sunset, the stargazing portion uses a professional telescope. Hot beverages are served during the star show, and the guide takes a complimentary photo that is emailed to each guest. Travelers who want additional shots can bring a personal camera as well. Because the summit sits at high elevation, warm clothing is essential, and travelers should dress for changing conditions before setting out. Stargazing depends on clear skies and is weather permitting, so cloud cover can affect that portion of the evening.
