About This Place

Akaka Falls Loop delivers Hawaii's most accessible view of a 442-foot waterfall plunging into a lush tropical gorge. This paved 0.4-mile loop trail in Akaka Falls State Park takes 20-30 minutes and suits families with children, seniors, and anyone who wants dramatic scenery without steep climbs. The trail begins at the parking area and winds through dense rainforest filled with bamboo groves, wild orchids, and towering ferns. Two viewpoints showcase Akaka Falls, where Kolekole Stream drops straight down a sheer cliff face into a misty pool below. You'll also spot 100-foot Kahuna Falls along the way. Morning visits between 8-10 AM offer the best lighting for photos and fewer crowds. The trail stays open from sunrise to sunset daily with no admission fee, though parking fills quickly on weekends. Rain happens frequently here, so bring a light jacket and wear shoes with good traction - the paved path becomes slippery when wet. The 13-mile drive from Hilo takes you through sugar cane country and the small town of Honomu. Parking holds about 40 cars in a paved lot right at the trailhead. Restrooms and picnic tables sit near the entrance. Stay on designated paths and behind safety barriers - the cliff edges drop hundreds of feet with no warning. The humid rainforest climate means mosquitoes are present year-round, so pack repellent. This short walk rewards you with some of the Big Island's most spectacular waterfall views.
