Old Kona Airport Park is a State and County shoreline park just west of Kailua-Kona town, with parking along the whole length of the old runway, fronting the beach. The County lists Old Kona Airport Beach Park as part of Kailua Park, which also holds a gym, an aquatic center and a playground. To get there, turn west where Palani Road meets Kuakini Highway and continue past the old industrial area. The shoreline is rocky, with tide pools, some white sand and low cliffs. A few inlets and sand channels give swimming entry in calm water, and families often take children to swim in a large sandy tide pool inland of the rocky shore, east of the park frontage. Snorkelers and shore divers usually go in at a partly protected cove at the northwestern end. The waters are a Marine Life Conservation District: taking marine life is prohibited except for the activities the rules permit, taking or altering sand, shells, coral or rock is prohibited, do not feed fish, and keep boats out of the No Boating Zone offshore. The County warns of hazardous footing, currents and waves. The park has restrooms, showers, pavilions, playgrounds and sports fields.
